But after years on the road ourselves, and listening closely to the people who live and travel in our vans, we made a decision: good enough wasn’t good enough anymore.
Our new La Vista caravans are built on a fully TIG welded aluminium frame and we want to tell you exactly why.
The Traditional Timber Frame: Where It Started
There’s nothing inherently wrong with timber framing. It’s been the backbone of Australian caravans for generations, and skilled builders have produced genuinely beautiful rigs using it. Timber is easy to work with, widely available, and forgiving in the hands of a craftsperson.
But timber has limitations that become very real the further you travel from the bitumen.
Moisture is timber’s greatest enemy. Australia’s climate is unforgiving – from the tropical humidity of Far North Queensland to the cold, wet winters of the highlands. Over time, moisture finds its way into timber frames through seals, joins, and the natural expansion and contraction of the wood itself. Once it does, the rot begins slowly and silently. By the time it’s visible, the structural damage is often significant.
Timber moves. As temperatures and humidity fluctuate, timber expands and contracts. This movement puts stress on walls, joins, and fittings – loosening screws, cracking seals, and eventually compromising the integrity of the build.
Timber attracts pests. White ants and other insects are a real and ongoing threat, particularly when caravans are stored or parked in bushland settings.
And while a well-built timber frame caravan can last many years with careful maintenance, that word maintenance is doing a lot of heavy lifting.
Why We Chose TIG Welded Aluminium
When we designed the new La Vista, we started with a simple question: What does someone who actually lives and travels in this van need from the frame?
The answer shaped everything.
Structural Strength You Can Trust. TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas) welding produces some of the strongest, cleanest welds available in fabrication. Unlike bolted or screwed timber joins that can loosen and flex over corrugated outback tracks, a TIG welded aluminium frame is a single unified structure. Every join is fused – not fastened.
The result is a chassis and frame that moves as one, absorbing road vibration and impact without the racking and twisting that can slowly pull a timber-framed van apart over time.
Aluminium Doesn’t Rot. Full Stop. This is the single most important advantage for Australian conditions. Aluminium does not absorb moisture. It does not rot, swell, warp, or harbour mould. You can drive through river crossings, camp through wet season, and store your van uncovered through a Tasmanian winter and the frame remains structurally sound.
For grey nomads and serious travellers covering tens of thousands of kilometers a year, this isn’t a minor benefit. It’s the difference between a van that lasts a decade and one that lasts a lifetime.
Pest Proof. White ants can’t eat aluminium. It’s a simple fact with serious implications for anyone who parks their van in rural or bushland areas. The risk that plagues timber-framed caravans simply doesn’t exist with an aluminium structure.
Lighter Where It Matters. Aluminium offers an exceptional strength-to-weight ratio. Our TIG welded frames are engineered to be strong where loads demand it and light everywhere else – contributing to better tow vehicle fuel economy, reduced wear on suspension, and more flexibility with payload.
Built to Last, Not Just to Look Good. A TIG welded aluminium frame doesn’t need the same ongoing maintenance that timber demands. There’s no periodic treatment, no checking for moisture ingress, no worry about what’s happening inside the walls. The bones of your La Vista are set for the long haul.
This Isn’t Just About the Material – It’s About the Philosophy
Switching to TIG welded aluminium framing wasn’t a cost-cutting exercise. Done properly, it’s actually more demanding to fabricate than a timber frame. It requires skilled welders, precision jigs, and a genuine commitment to engineering rather than convention.
We made the change because we believe a caravan should be the most reliable thing you own. When you’re 600 kilometers from the nearest town, you need to trust your shelter completely.
