The Story Behind La Vista Caravans: Where It All Began

There’s something special about a business born from a family dream — and La Vista Caravans is exactly that. Founded in 2007 and based in Campbellfield, Victoria, La Vista has grown from a bold idea into one of Australia’s most respected boutique caravan manufacturers. But like all great stories, it started simply: with a family who wanted to build something better.

A Family Vision Takes Shape

La Vista Caravans was founded by Allan and Mary — a couple who brought complementary strengths to the business from day one. Allan came to the venture with deep, hands-on experience in the caravan industry, particularly in plumbing and build craftsmanship. Mary, of Spanish descent, took charge of the administrative side of the business and brought a creative flair that would shape the brand in a uniquely meaningful way.

It was Mary who gave La Vista its name. La Vista — Spanish for “the view” — is more than a brand name. It’s a philosophy. A promise that every journey taken in one of their caravans would open up new vistas, new horizons, and new memories for Australian families. Mary also applied that same creative touch to naming the individual models in the range, each carrying a Spanish-inspired moniker that reflects the spirit of adventure and travel.

The Decision to Build Something Different

The founding decision was straightforward but ambitious: design a well-sized caravan, built to a genuinely high standard of workmanship, with quality fittings and fixtures that would more than compete with the existing market. As a family, they thought through every detail — the placement of features, height considerations, fabrics and colours, serviceability, and the amount of room a travelling family really needs.

Allan has been candid in interviews about the early days. Mistakes were made — as they are in any new venture — but those mistakes became the foundation of a wealth of knowledge. Rather than cutting corners to recover, Allan and Mary leaned into quality, developing a disciplined approach to construction that would become the hallmark of every La Vista van.

Old School Values, Lasting Results

Allan describes himself as an “old school” kind of guy, and that philosophy runs through everything La Vista does. The company has never chased rapid expansion or volume. Instead, they’ve focused on building each caravan the right way, relying on the reputation of their work and word-of-mouth referrals from satisfied customers to grow the business organically.

That approach proved wise. La Vista carved out a niche as a small-volume, high-quality builder operating out of Campbellfield — the heartland of Australian caravan manufacturing. Their factory, while modest in size at around 1,500 square metres, is deliberately laid out for quality and efficiency, with materials staged centrally and the workflow designed so each van progresses through build stages in an organised, controlled manner.

A New Generation Joins the Story

The La Vista story has always been a family one — and that spirit lives on in the most meaningful way. Sadly, Allan has passed away, bringing the end of an era for the founding family. But rather than closing a chapter, his passing has led to the beginning of a new one.

La Vista has since been passed on to a new family who, by no small coincidence, share the same ethnic heritage as Allan and Mary. Like the founders before them, they are taking a leap of faith — embracing the challenge of a new venture with the same passion and commitment that first brought La Vista to life. The new owners are no strangers to the caravan world, having been immersed in the industry since 2014, and they understand intimately what makes La Vista special.

Central to this new chapter is their daughter, who is eager to help grow and evolve the business while ensuring it stays true to the values Allan and Mary built it on — quality craftsmanship, family warmth, and a genuine love for the Australian caravanning lifestyle. In many ways, it’s a remarkably fitting passing of the torch: from one family to another, bound by shared roots, shared values, and a shared belief that there’s nothing quite like hitting the open road in a van you can truly be proud of.

The Name Says It All

From its very first van to its growing range of on-road and off-road models today, La Vista Caravans has stayed true to its founding promise. Quality over quantity. Family over franchise. The view over the fast lane.

“Twice the value, twice the fun — check out the quality, it’s second to none.”

That’s not just a tagline. For Allan, Mary, and Shane, it’s been the guiding principle since day one in 2007. And for the thousands of Australians who’ve towed a La Vista van across this great country, it’s a promise that’s been kept.
